Contemporary living room with large dark gray polished marble-look floor tiles in a Bulverde subdivision home

Gray Marble-Look Living Room

Bulverde, TX

This living room in a Bulverde subdivision home was tiled with large-format dark gray polished porcelain in a marble-look finish, replacing the original builder carpet. The slab was in good condition but required moisture testing before setting polished porcelain, which is sensitive to moisture vapor transmission that can cause adhesion issues over time. The test came back within acceptable limits and we proceeded with a polymer-modified large-format mortar.

The 32x32 inch tiles were set in a straight grid pattern with 1/16 inch joints, which required the leveling clip system to be used at every joint to maintain the flat surface necessary for polished tile to look its best.

What We Did

  1. Performed moisture vapor emission test on slab; confirmed acceptable levels before proceeding
  2. Established straight grid layout from room centerline; dry-laid tiles to confirm cut sizes at walls
  3. Set 32x32 polished porcelain with polymer-modified large-format mortar; leveling clips at all joints
  4. Grouted with dark gray unsanded grout at 1/16 inch joints; buffed grout haze from polished surface
