Cream marble-look polished porcelain floor tile in a Spring Branch kitchen with island seating

Kitchen Marble-Look Floor

Spring Branch, TX

This kitchen floor in a Spring Branch slab home was retiled with large-format cream marble-look polished porcelain, replacing builder-grade 18x18 ceramic tile that had been installed when the home was built. The slab was in good condition but had a slight low spot near the island area that was filled with self-leveling compound before tile was set. The 24x48 format was chosen to minimize grout lines and give the kitchen an open feel that matched the new island and pendant lighting the homeowner had recently installed.

The tile was set in a staggered brick-joint pattern at 33% offset, which required careful planning at the refrigerator and dishwasher openings to ensure the appliances could be removed for service without damaging the tile.

What We Did

  1. Removed existing 18x18 ceramic tile; assessed slab flatness and filled low spot with self-leveling compound
  2. Established layout lines for 33% offset brick-joint pattern; planned cuts at appliance openings
  3. Set 24x48 polished porcelain with large-format medium-bed mortar; back-buttered all tiles for full coverage
  4. Installed leveling clips throughout; grouted with light gray unsanded grout at 1/16 inch joints
