Herringbone Backsplash in Cabin Kitchen
Sattler, TX
This cabin kitchen on the River Road in Sattler was renovated with new natural wood cabinets, and the backsplash was part of the same project. The homeowner chose a cream elongated tile in a herringbone pattern to complement the warm wood tones. The herringbone was centered on the range wall so the V of the pattern points symmetrically toward the range hood, which required working out the exact starting tile position before the first tile was set.
The cabin's kitchen had a slightly wavy wall from the original construction. We applied a skim coat of setting material to flatten the wall surface before tiling so the tiles would sit plumb and the grout joints would stay consistent.
What We Did
- Assessed wall flatness; applied skim coat of setting material to flatten irregular wall surface
- Centered herringbone pattern on range hood axis; established 45-degree layout lines
- Set cream elongated tile in herringbone with standard white thinset; cut cleanly at all cabinet and outlet locations
- Grouted with cream sanded grout; silicone caulk at countertop joint; sealed grout after cure
