Diagonal-set rustic stone-look ceramic floor tiles in a Sattler riverside vacation cabin

Rustic Stone Floor in River Cabin

Sattler, TX

This vacation cabin near the Guadalupe River in Sattler had a plywood subfloor that had been tiled previously with a thin ceramic tile set directly without backer board. The existing tile was cracking and hollow in multiple areas. We removed all existing tile and adhesive, assessed the plywood for moisture damage, and installed cement backer board before the new tile. Given the proximity to the river and the higher ambient humidity of this property, we used a crack isolation membrane over the full floor and a high-moisture-rated penetrating sealer on the finished surface.

The earthy brown and gray stone-look tiles set on a 45-degree diagonal fit the rustic character of the cabin and provide a durable surface that can handle foot traffic from guests coming in from the river.

What We Did

  1. Removed existing tile and adhesive; assessed plywood for moisture damage; replaced one damaged section
  2. Installed cement backer board; applied crack isolation membrane over full floor
  3. Set stone-look ceramic on 45-degree diagonal with polymer-modified thinset
  4. Grouted with dark gray sanded grout; applied high-moisture-rated penetrating sealer to tile and grout
